Do I need to be fit to climb Kilimanjaro?
Fitness helps with the physical demands of multi-day trekking, but it does not protect against altitude sickness. Many very fit climbers fail to summit due to AMS while less fit climbers who acclimatise well succeed. The single most important factor is how slowly you ascend and how well you acclimatise — not how strong your lungs are at sea level.
What is summit night like, altitude-wise?
Summit night typically begins around midnight from high camp (4,700–4,900m). You climb through the night to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at or around sunrise. The cold, darkness, and exhaustion combine with the altitude to make this the hardest night of most climbers' lives. Pulse oximeter readings in the 70s are common on summit night. This is why slow, steady movement and adequate acclimatisation in the preceding days are critical.
Is Kilimanjaro more dangerous than Everest Base Camp?
In some ways yes — despite being slightly higher than EBC, Kilimanjaro is climbed faster. The EBC trek takes 12–14 days to reach 5,364m. Kilimanjaro summit (5,895m) is reached in 5–9 days. The faster ascent rate means less acclimatisation time at an even higher altitude. EBC trekkers who follow the standard itinerary have more acclimatisation time than most Kilimanjaro climbers. Kilimanjaro's accessibility also means many climbers underestimate the altitude risk.
What happens if I develop serious AMS on Kilimanjaro?
Your guide will initiate descent immediately — this is the primary treatment. Kilimanjaro has a well-established rescue infrastructure. Helicopter evacuation is available in good weather. The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi has experience treating altitude illness. Your guide carries an emergency oxygen supply and most reputable operators have satellite communication. This is why hiring a reputable operator is non-negotiable.
